Family Photography in Floyd, Virginia — Everyone You Love, in One Warm Frame
Family photography that turns a busy, wiggly group into portraits you'll actually want to hang on your wall. I've photographed little kids, teens, grandparents, big reunions, and families who come back every single year for an update. I lightly direct every part of the session, so your family can just be exactly who you are.
The real life moments!
Photos that feel real
Photographing families is my favorite, truly. After becoming a mom, I strive and care deeply to capture photos of you with your kids that feel exactly who you truly are as a family. When they are grown, I want these photos to take you right back to those tiny curious adventurous babies. I don’t want you to only see how little they were, but hear their giggles, and remember how it felt when they held onto a single finger with their entire hand, how it was to hold them in a tight squeeze, how they looked at you as if you hung the moon just for them.
I Keep Kids Playful So Your Photos Feel Natural
I know it's stressful when you're worried about what mood your child will show up in (trust me, I get this personally lol), but know now - I don’t want them to sit still! I bring the silly questions and fun prompts into every session, so real smiles show up instead of forced ones. Even the shyest kids tend to loosen up once we're a few minutes in and the games start rolling. I center family sessions around the kiddos, so we follow their lead! If they are feeling tired and shy, cool because we are going to sit and see how my birds we can count in the sky. If they are energetic and not ready to settle down, awesome because we are going to play a game and they won’t even realize we are capturing real memories you’d make at home. (:
Coordinate Outfits That Tie the Group Together
Dressing the whole family can feel a little overwhelming, but I’m always here to help! You can message me anytime if you need help picking things out, but for now:
pick a color palette - soft neutrals/earth tones are always a safe option. Avoid neon colors that take away from the person wearing them!
coordinate instead of matching.
avoid mixing too many patterns!
texture is GREAT in photos! Pleated skirt, knit cardigan, lace etc
loose, comfortable fitting is best for interactive style photos like mine! You want to be able to move!
Layers! This adds more to your photos and elevates them even more!
Example: Start with one persons outfit, and base everyone else’s outfits around it! If mom is wearing a busy floral patterned dress of yellow and blue, have daughter wear one of those colors as a solid dress and stick a yellow bow in her hair, brother can wear a cream/white shirt with light denim shorts, and dad can wear khakis with a dusty blue button up or t-shirt! (:

Frequently Asked Questions

I shoot family sessions year-round, and fall color along with late-spring green tend to be the most popular choices. Those two seasons book up first, so it helps to reach out early if you already have a date in mind.
-
Family sessions can include anyone, from a small household to a big multi-generation reunion. Just tell me your headcount ahead of time, so I can plan out the groupings before we ever meet in person. That way, I can also build in enough time for everyone.
-
I'll help you choose a simple color palette once you book, so everyone coordinates without matching each other piece for piece. This takes the guesswork off your plate and makes the whole group look pulled together in every shot.

Yes, every generation is welcome at a family session with me, from newborns to great-grandparents. I keep the pace easy and unhurried, so older relatives and tiny newcomers both feel comfortable the whole time we're shooting.
